Reasons why you should begin your journey with Ballet (when you're 50 and over)

You can begin learning Ballet at ANY age – aged 9 or 99 (and all ages in between!). Dance teachers and instructors around the globe are always delighted when an adult decides to dance their way through life!

Although Ballet improves your fitness levels, it’s also a diverse health improver:

  1. Bone density – as we age (particularly women) our bone density naturally declines over time. This is primarily due to a reduction in the levels of oestrogen once we reach the menopause. Ballet fitness provides a diverse range of resistance exercises (without the need for additional weights!) which are proven to help stabilize and even improve bone density. Improved bone density reduces our risk of osteoporosis, breaks and sprains.

  2. Improved memory – Ballet is often focused around memorizing a combination of repeated movements and then coordinating the body to music. This takes a considerable amount of brain power (sometimes more than we even realise!) - it’s incredibly important to exercise the body AND brain!

  3. Joint friendly – in a ballet class, we move our bodies in many ways at a lower intensity. Unlike a hobby such as running, we aren’t putting our bodies through repetitive movements and motions over and over and OVER again. This in turn helps to protect the body from injury!

  4. Mental health – there have been many studies conducted on the impact of dance and mental health and several studies have shown that dance improves mood and helps to reduce stress levels! There is something quite magical and reassuring about letting your body move freely to beautiful classical music – give it a try.

  5. Social life – those who dance together, stay together! It sounds slightly cliché, but some of the best friendships are those created within a dance studio. Here at Ballet Fusion, we all support each other and it really is like one big ballet family ❤️

  6. Confidence – starting to learn any new skill can feel daunting. We will guide you through the technique of exercises and movement, but dance allows the freedom of expression and interpretation – you’re the creator of your own dance journey and you’ll be surprised at how quickly you improve, and how quickly your confidence grows.
